The 20th edition of the POWTECH trade fair for processing, analysis, and handling of powder and bulk solids in Nuremberg presented 835 exhibitors from 29 countries in six exhibition halls. More than 14,000 visitors benefited from the supporting program in addition to the broad range of products and services at the exhibition itself. Around 40 percent of the exhibitors and the visitors came from outside Germany to this meeting place for the bulk solids community in all industries, from the foodstuffs, pharmaceutical and chemical sectors to construction, ceramics and recycling.

On many stands, companies presented complete systems and machines for conveying, separating, grinding, mixing, stirring or agglomerating, many of them in live operation. The exhibitors also displayed control and automation solutions, as well as components and accompanying technologies, including devices for measuring and analysis, and filter, air cleaning and explosion protection equipment. The exhibitors praised the very high quality of the discussions at their stands, and the high level of interest shown by the trade visitors.

Cloud solution for the collection and analysis of production data are mostly presented by the large supplier but SME are also finding their place in their respective markets. For example:

Proleit: The German medium-sized enterprise offers solutions and products for vertical integration – from the control level and the process and plant control level (MES) to the corporate management level (ERP). Their MES-solution Plant iT now uses GE Digital’s Predix cloud platform to analyze captured data fast and efficiently to facilitate reduced downtime and enhanced productivity etc.

AZO: The family-owner is a specialist for bulk & raw material handling, conveying systems etc. The latest version of their Kastor process control and instrumentation system allows even small companies the visualization and controls of their plants, and presents data to them in a way that makes optimization and informed choices possible.

Radar Level Measurement

The radar level meter market is highly competitive and profitable, major suppliers are Endress+Hauser, Vega Grieshaber, Siemens, Krohne and UWT. Today, all of them offer devices in the 78-80GHz range, the newest technology to be introduced. But the selected GHz-range still depends on the application and not every measurement task needs the highest available frequency.

Other Measurement and Instrumentation

Siemens: The compact weighing electronics SIWAREX WP521 ST and WP522 ST for gravimetric level measurement of silos and hoppers as well as for platform scales, also in Ex-areas.  They allow for a totally integrated hardware setup, programming and operation/control of the scale within the TIA environment.

Endress+Hauser: The Swiss company presented among others their iTHERM TrustSens hygienic, self-calibrating thermometer aimed at the life science and the food & beverage industries, which is designed to eliminate the risk of undetected non-conformities.

WIKA: Their model TR22-A resistance thermometer is used for temperature measurement in sanitary applications. The connection head can be removed together with the measuring insert, allowing the resistance thermometer to be calibrated without disconnecting the electrical connections.

Bürkert: The pneumatic valve island, Type 8647 AirLINE SP, is a modular, electro-pneumatic automation system consisting designed for space-saving installation and integration into the decentralized peripheral system "SIMATIC ET 200SP" from Siemens. The valve island is suited for the food & beverage, pharma and cosmetics industry.
