A new collaborative initiative, the AI-RAN Alliance, was launched at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The alliance aims to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into cellular technology to advance radio access network (RAN) technology and mobile networks for 5G and upcoming 6G.

The founding members of the alliance include mobile network operators (MNOs), network infrastructure providers, hyperscalers, and academic institutions in the AI and wireless domains, such as AWS, Arm, DeepSig, Ericsson, Microsoft, Nokia, NVIDIA, Samsung Electronics, SoftBank, and T-Mobile. The alliance’s mission is to enhance mobile network efficiency, reduce power consumption, retrofit existing infrastructure, and unlock new economic opportunities for MNOs with AI.

The alliance will focus on three main areas of research and innovation: AI for RAN, AI and RAN, and AI on RAN. These areas will involve advancing RAN capabilities with AI, integrating AI and RAN processes, and deploying AI services at the network edge through RAN to increase operational efficiency and offer new services to mobile users.

Alliance members expressed their support and vision for the AI-RAN Alliance, highlighting the benefits and opportunities of AI for the telecom industry and society. They also emphasized the importance of collaboration and innovation to achieve the goals of the alliance.

The GSMA, the trade body that represents the interests of mobile network operators worldwide, welcomed the AI-RAN Alliance and its ambitions to create new, open platforms that can democratize the use of AI in the mobile industry. The GSMA also expressed its readiness to work with the alliance through its initiatives.

The AI-RAN Alliance represents an exciting development in the integration of AI and cellular technology, with the potential to transform the telecom industry and unlock new opportunities for innovation and growth.
