Overview

Data, information, and people are a critical part of the digital transformation at Plains Midstream Canada (PMC). Plains Midstream Canada removed over 50 percent redundant, obsolete, and trivial (ROT) data, demonstrated compliance to authorities and ensured that critical documents were available to the right person at the right time. Plains Midstream Canada specializes in transportation, processing, storage, and marketing solutions for crude oil, natural gas, and natural gas liquids (NGL). The company links petroleum producers with refiners and other customers via pipeline, truck, and rail transportation. PMC’s assets include 7,600 km of pipeline and 23 storage facilities strategically located throughout Canada and the U.S. The operations include two primary business groups: crude oil and natural gas liquids (NGL), with a network of pipelines and fleets of trucks and railcars that transport crude oil and NGL.

Digital Transformation Information Data Challenges

Plains Midstream Canada needs to have accurate and timely information readily available to operate safely and meet government audits and regulations, while enabling data-based business decisions when needed for trading and transportation. According to Erin Delorme, Information Systems Management Specialist, Plains Midstream Canada during the recent ARC Advisory Group virtual forum, “Big Data, analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), dashboarding, and reporting are important, but you need to have a solid foundation for the entire company’s infrastructure with robust platforms and structured information.” It is important to be able to access information efficiently, so they developed tools and processes for fixed, linear, and mobile assets to help operations and many of their other business units, including the supply chain.

Managing 80 Million Files of Unstructured Data

With their infrastructure in place, Ms. Delorme’s team deployed a technology that managed the output of new Taking Control of Datainformation and enabled them to find older information to keep their internal and government audits trustworthy and their people safe. Because there are field operators and shift operators working from home, performing work off-site, and reduced personnel for on-premise shifts, it is vital to ensure worker safety and keep up to date on the latest GOPs and SSOPs. The company ensures that they are doing the right thing for the right people and enabling relationships between all entities -- people, process, data, and other things.
