Earlier this year, SAP and Trenitalia organized an Executive Summit in Rome and the National Railway Museum in Pietrarsa (Naples).  During the event Trenitalia, Italy’s railway operator, communicated the company’s new IoT-enabled approach to maintenance management that will run on SAP software.  Trenitalia expects that the approach will help it save more than €100 million annually in maintenance costs.

SAP discussed the partnership and co-development with Trenitalia and the company’s commitment to investing in IoT; and announced SAP IoT Solutions and Industry 4.0 Solution Package, acquisitions of two companies, and the creation of SAP IoT Labs.

The combined announcements, the presence of both companies’ CEOs, plus the CEO of Trenitalia’s mother company Ferrovie Dello Stato Italiane, and the prestigious locations, indicated the high importance of the event for both companies.

Key takeaways are:

  • SAP is making a major commitment to Industrial IoT
  • Trenitalia is pushing the boundaries to become a highly competitive international railway service provider
  • Digital transformation and culture change are inseparable
