Operator Training Simulators Are in for Big Changes

New ARC Advisory Group research on the Operator Training Simulators (OTS) market finds that with simulators of coal fired power plants in sharp decline now, and the 2050 goals for the energy industry to get to net zero emissions, the 30-year future of OTS systems for oil and gas and refining is sure to decline. With digital twin models of virtually every human endeavor, building training systems with these models is now easier than ever. New technologies in photometric and LiDAR modeling (PhoDAR) are making the creation of 3D models very easy. The new process industries of mining and processing lithium, copper, cobalt, nickel, graphite, and rare earth metals are growing in countries that have these resources, although simulation-based training in these processes is less common than the oil and gas simulators.

New green hydrogen infrastructure is predicted, but the operation of electrolyzers is not so complex to justify extensive simulation. Blue hydrogen (reforming with carbon capture) is more typical of conventional refining OTS systems, but so far this technology is not established at scale. With a new generation of process operators there remains a strong need for OTS systems in the process industries to ensure efficient and safe operation. With new digital twin models and computer expertise industries like pulp and paper, food, pharma, mining, cement, and water/wastewater, and electric grid T&D are seeing growth in operator training simulators, including immersive training simulators.

"The decline of coal power generation is noticeable now and the transition from fossil energy to non-carbon emitting electric power is influencing the market for OTS systems. Electrification of industrial, commercial, and residential sectors is beginning to reduce demand for oil and gas with a gradual reduction for training simulators in refining. Digitalization and digital twins provide the process models that are enabling OTS systems to expand into a wider range of process industries," according to Rick Rys, Principal Consultant and key author of ARC's Operator Training Simulators Market Research Report.
