ODVA announced the release of a new EtherNet/IP ToolBox Integrated Learning Environment (ToolBoxILETM) for product developers who are new to the EtherNet/IP technology and standards. The ToolBoxILE is a pc-based software tool that provides developers with a self-contained learning environment on the EtherNet/IP technology and standards. It comprises a family of integrated tools to help engineers learn the basics about EtherNet/IP needed to develop product specifications for implementation by an enabling technology partner, or to start his or her own first EtherNet/IP development project.

Recognizing that substantial engineering know-how is needed to specify and develop smart and secure devices for industrial automation, ODVA aims to help its licensed EtherNet/IP vendors to shorten their on-boarding time for new EtherNet/IP development. In the coming years, ODVA expects this need to increase through the natural attrition in industry due to retirement and the loss of institutional knowledge this brings. The ToolBoxILE is one of the ways that the ODVA community will help to fill this talent gap. Major features of the TooBoxILE include the following:

  • EtherNet/IP ShortCourse. The ShortCourse is an EtherNet/IP training and instruction manual that walks the developer through the basics of The EtherNet/IP Specification, including hyperlinks to critical sections. It provides a self-paced learning environment that introduces the user to topics at progressive levels from beginning to intermediate to advanced and then helps launch the new developer on his/her way to an EtherNet/IP product development project with a step-by-step guide to best practices for the development workflow.

  • CIPengine Reference Stack. A working example of a compliant EtherNet/IP stack brings The EtherNet/IP Specification to life. The CIPengine is architected for the purpose of education and includes all source code and instruction on using it to develop sample applications. The code is provided in the C programming language as open source under a modified BSD license.

  • EtherNet/IP Example Virtual Devices. Two “virtual” EtherNet/IP example devices are included with the ToolBoxILE, built using the CIPengine Reference Stack. The Virtual Digital I/O Module and the Virtual Communications Adapter include all source code, as well as development documentation, so the user can observe the development process as well as the finished example.

  • EtherNet/IP Virtual Lab. The Virtual Lab provides the user with guided hands-on development opportunities with the ability to build one’s own virtual EtherNet/IP devices using the CIPengine Reference Stack. This presents the users with a variety of opportunities to gain hands-on experience with EtherNet/IP, including producing an Electronic Data Sheet (EDS) using ODVA’s EZ-EDS software, learning the basics of ODVA conformance testing by running the virtual devices through ODVA’s Conformance Test Software for EtherNet/IP, and using a network protocol analyzer (such as Wireshark with its included EtherNet/IP dissectors) to see EtherNet/IP network traffic in real-time.

  • Familiar Developer Environment. ToolBoxILE runs natively within the Eclipse integrated development environment and thus provides a learning environment that is familiar and more comfortable for software developers. Eclipse is an open source platform provided to ToolBoxILE purchasers under the Eclipse Public License.

ODVA’s ToolBoxILE is recommended for first-time product developers who are new to The EtherNet/IP Specification and the development of EtherNet/IP products. The user license for ODVA’s ToolBoxILE can be purchased via ODVA’s on-line order portal at https://www.odva.org/Submit-Order. Users must have a subscription to The EtherNet/IP Specification. A subscription to ODVA’s Conformance Test Software for EtherNet/IP is recommended. Both subscriptions are also available at ODVA’s on-line order portal noted above. Purchasers must be an employee of an ODVA-licensed vendor for EtherNet/IP.
