ARC Report Abstract

Overview

In February, ARC Advisory Group hosted its 22nd Annual Industry Forum in Orlando, Florida. The event featured 48 sessions, and 180 executive speakers. As has been the case in recent years, an entire Forum track was dedicated to cybersecurity, with an extended scope that touched upon cybersecurity for smart cities and the need to coordinate risk management across process safety and cybersecurity.

Participants addressed these and other common themes in a series of workshops and panel discussions. This Insight provides an overview of these themes and their relevance for those addressing the cybersecurity of industrial systems.

Cybersecurity Situation

For more than 15 years, governments, regulatory agencies and industry stakeholders have focused on the need to improve cybersecurity in critical infrastructure sectors such as energy, chemicals, and critical manufacturing. Much of this attention has been directed to improving the security of auto-mated systems. cybersecurity erics%20cybersecurity.jpgThese are not limited to traditional industrial applications. Similar, and sometimes identical, technology and systems are also used in building automation, transportation, medical systems, and other areas. The use of common technology means that the associated threats and vulnerabilities apply across a wide range of industries and applications. Trends such as smart cities and the industrial internet of things (IIoT) provide additional justification for a coordinated response.

In response, industry has developed a comprehensive set of standards for use by suppliers, integrators, and asset owners. While these standards represent valuable elements of an effective response, they are not sufficient in the face of recent trends and developments in technology.
